We know misogyny is rising. Now we have a description of what is happening, some statistics about it, and information on some remediation efforts.
I was busy in the Progressive politics space from 2009 through 2014, and in that environment there are organizing efforts lead by women, organizing efforts where there is a strong female component behind a male front man, and purely male working groups are fairly rare.
Single gender groups have some well known failure modes. Those that are entirely women can fall into a pattern of catty sniping. All male groups will do well on A task, but given a stream of tasks they will tend to overreach, and end up in conflict with allies.
Having participated in many social movements, starting with Coffee Party in 2009, I’ve seen a lot of this first hand. When I encounter all male groups that have both a good idea and some maturity, I’ll ask “Where are the women?” One is enough for a handful of people, but for larger groups it’s important to have two or more, this tamps down inappropriate male dominance. I’ve been the first and sometimes only man in previously all female groups, and in that environment I am usually treated as a specialist in technology related work, or a source of advice and assistance regarding the dirty end of the playing field.
I am very concerned about the direction our country is headed, and I strongly believe and seek to implement women in leadership roles anywhere I have input into the organizational development. This is a source of quiet strength, an alloy that will surpass brittle, make only organizations.
