A Sikh activist named Satinder Pal living in Yolo county, northwest of Sacramento, was the target of what appears to be an assassination attempt while riding as a passenger in a pickup on I-505. Hardeep Singh Nijjar was murdered in British Columbia last year and the FBI broke up a similar scheme in New York not long after that. The Indian government was behind both of those plots.
This area has a lot of Sikhs, pretty much every convenience store franchise seems to have at least some employees that hail from Punjab. They were headed for dinner in Vacaville, and that undoubtedly meant the Clay Oven, a regionally famous Indian restaurant. This is really out of character for the Central Valley, things occasionally get weird in Sacramento in connection with right wing extremists, but otherwise it’s quiet. The only Sikh related trouble I can recall from the eight years I’ve lived here was one incident with a temple getting spray painted, turned out to be some idiot male children inspired by internet access. There were compelled apologies and lots and lots of restitution painting after that.
I hate to see things like this. overall California is pretty quiet, and if it can happen to Sikhs today, it’ll be Mexicans tomorrow, and all the rest of us not too long after that.
